Arthur pulled Sam a little closer. They were sitting on her couch, supposedly watching a movie, but Arthur was still too drunk to focus for very long.
Sam chuckled at him. “If you keep drinking like this you’re going to be too hungover tomorrow to figure out a way out of killing Varner.”
“That sounds like you assume I’m ever going to stop drinking.” Arthur took another long sip from his tequila sunrise.
“I’ve gotten you drunk enough times to know that’s not true. You’ll pass out in another hour, maybe less,” Sam predicted.
“Yeah, probably,” Arthur admitted. “But at least your cousin isn’t here to ruin the moment.” He grabbed her ass playfully.
“How’d you get Macy to go to bed so early, anyway?” Sam asked. She stretched her legs out across Arthur’s lap just to make him drool a little more. She was wearing a skirt that showed off her damn fine legs.
“I told her I was going to teach her how to take tequila shots without spitting them out. She got really drunk really fast and decided it was nap time,” Arthur explained.
Sam burst out laughing. “Brilliant! I love your ideas for getting rid of her.”
“Always happy to oblige.” Arthur ran his hand along her leg.
Sam hugged him tightly. “What are we going to do tomorrow?”
Arthur sighed. “I think I’ll have to pick a side, either Varner or Priscilla. Then I just have to hope that they’ll protect us.”
“Who are you going to choose?” Sam asked.
“Up until Hank died that would have been an easy choice, but Varner has gotten just as bad as Priscilla,” Arthur said.
“But doesn’t Varner have more men and money? Shouldn’t he be the safer choice?”
Arthur nodded. “He should be, but since he doesn’t seem to give a damn any more I doubt he’ll expend any effort to protect us from Priscilla.”
“And since Priscilla is the one making her big move you think she’ll try a little harder to keep you alive.” Sam whistled softly. “I can see why it’s not an easy call. Maybe you should wait until you’re sober to make your decision.”
Arthur laughed. “You think?”
Someone knocked at the front door.
Arthur groaned. “How does everyone in town know where you live?”
Sam tried to stand and get the door, but Arthur wrapped his long arms around her and pulled her back down onto his lap.
“Maybe they’ll go away,” Arthur said hopefully.
Whoever it was knocked again, louder this time.
“Evidently not.” Sam disentangled herself and went to answer the door. “Jesus Christ, you aren’t going to believe this,” she called from the kitchen.
Arthur set his drink down and went to the kitchen to peer through the peep hole. “Mother of God,” he breathed.
Bartlebee and Desiree stood at Sam’s front door.
